Hi All! I’m excited to start my first series of book reviews for Holy Corpse Rising. As much as I want to spoil the whole story in one sentence, I understand that is something only witches would do. So let’s just jump right into this!
This story follows Nikola Eskalibur a monk in 15th century Rome. Nikola spends all his time in Castel Sant’ Angelo Grand Archive obsessively researching witches. Witches are women of calamities that destroy everything in their wake; and now that they have entered a holy war with the church. As fate will have it, it comes down to Nikola to find a solution to stop them. To aid him in his adventure is the first witch of witches known as Aethevald.
Plenty of Room For Growth
I feel that the story has plenty of potential to grow into something more unique. It can pivot towards action, horror, romance, or history as a focus within the main conflict. Some might try to boil the story down to just the harem adventure genre; however, saying that would not be entirely true. The story does not solely focus on ecchi scenes nor Nikola’s relationship with the witches. The plot’s way more present than one might think. Therefore, I can really tell the author put a lot of time and work into developing the story and its characters so far.
Idea of Justice
The overall feeling of the book is that our party of heroes is going on this grand adventure to save the world from witches with witches. That might seem like an oxymoron but good and evil are relative, and in a sense, what might damn you could also be your salvation. When Nikola recommends to use a witch to fight witches the Pontifex shows him where they keep a captured witch from ages past. But, as you see in the page above the author hints a there maybe be a duality to witches; with the face of the devil and the face of a virtuous women.
Histoical Verse Iskeai
What I appreciate about the story is that it’s different from the animes and mangas that are coming out right now. The closest thing to a historical genre right now is the isekai genre that is currently very popular because it takes a character, or characters, back into time or to another world. However, these worlds are historical in nature. They are based on real historical periods in time. Yet, many of them aren’t accurate at all because the author doesn’t have to do the research to make it accurate. Authors of the isekai genre are copying and pasting each other. When writing a historical genre there is so much research that needs to be done and the character has to fit within the history. This is much more challenging but if done right it’s very rewarding to the reader.
During my reading, it’s hard not to appreciate the art style in this story. The manga’s art is resemblant to the horror and action genre, which would make sense because there are some pretty gory scenes in the fights. For example, when the witches fight each other, body parts and organs are displayed with beautiful detail. The artist Hosana Tanaka, and writer, uses strong details verse a bubbly and less detailed art to show the sexiness and gore.
Now trying to compare art styles is a little hard because every artist is different. So when I say compare likeness I don’t mean exactly, but more like similarities within the story that give off the same feelings. The style of art is why the reader does not feel like this is resemblant of mangas like The Rising Of The Shield Hero or That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. The art is more like Vinland Saga or a lighter version (light as literally not as much black) Berserk.
- The pacing seems kind of fast because they have to introduce so many characters.
- There is no main bad person. It feels like the story can continue forever if there is no main villain.
- Personally I would like more gore this is not a weakness per say than it is a want.
- This manga is dated within 15th-century Rome. This is a unique setting that not a lot of mangas are doing right now and it’s refreshing.
- The author did plenty of research about the time period and setting. For example the Latin words and the structure of the Chruch that resembles Roman Catholic Church.
- The author has a unique art style that is their own.
My Full Take
I really like this story it’s different than what is currently popular. Like a breath of fresh air, you can learn about a new time period and be entertained all at the same time. If you want to read the book Amazon has it for sale. I would recommend this to anyone who likes the historical genre, action, or want something different than isekai.
One manga that would be similar and is finished is Dance in the Vampire Bund. Both of these series are from Seven Seas Entertainment LLC. They both have strong female leads amid the main character who is a male and through his eyes makes the female look femme fatal.
